Windows Phone 7 (WP7) Wifi turns off when phone goes to sleep
One of my very few complaints about WP7 is that when you put the phone to sleep or when it automatically goes to sleep (when screen goes off) the wifi turns off. This can be an issue for individuals that have small data packages on their plan (like myself), so when the wifi turns off your phone starts to use 3G data to receive email, app, etc updates, even though you are in range of a wifi connection.
I did some digging into the matter and came across multiple contradicting statements. So just wanted to clarify on what I’ve experienced with my Samsung Focus WP7 phone. When the phone goes to sleep the Wifi connection does turn off, and I can confirm this because when I wake the phone up the wifi icon goes through its connecting routine. Microsoft has stated that this is by design to increase battery life, and since all WP7 phones are sold with data packages it shouldn’t be a problem. My issue with that statement is that when there is a wifi connection available why not use that instead of precious 3G data. I understand the idea behind power savings but iPhone doesn’t turn off wifi to favor cellular data, it uses wifi when it’s available to save 3G data usage. If they can pull it off why can’t Microsoft and it’s hardware partners, it’s in the best interest of it’s customers.
The only times the wifi doesn’t turn off when it goes into sleep is if you are downloading, syncing, or anything using data off of the wifi connection, but once the data connection goes idle, the wifi turns off.
It’s not a total deal breaker but when you have a 100mb or 200 mb data plan, I would rather save my precious bandwidth for when I do need it when i’m not near a wifi connection.
